When did you leave Chesterton Community College?
2015
What is your current job title or field?
Professional singer specialising in choral music. I am a member of The Gesualdo Six which is a small ensemble, giving around 100 performances a year all around the world. Last year we toured Europe, the USA, Colombia and East Asia
Did you know as a teenager which career you wanted to pursue or did you come to realise this later on?
When I was a teenager I didn’t really know that being a professional singer was a possibility. For as long as I can remember I have been singing but, certainly whilst at school, it was never with an ambition to turn it into a career. It was only at University that a clearer path towards becoming a profession became obvious. Only then did I seriously think about singing as a job!
How did you start on your career?
It’s hard to pin-point a clear start to my career as I began to do professional singing work whilst reading for my degree. This proved invaluable experience when I got the job I currently hold with The Gesualdo Six in July 2023, shortly after graduating.
What do you like about your job? High points?
The main perk of my job is getting paid to do the thing I love. It also affords me amazing experiences travelling the world and performing in beautiful concert halls. A high point of my job is getting to meet audiences after a performance. Whether it’s Tokyo, Bogota or New York people it’s always fascinating to hear people’s stories and their connection with your music.
What is the first advice you would give a student wanting to follow in this direction?
My advice would be to pursue the thing you’re interested in and see where it takes you. Anyone who earns a living in the arts will tell you that they only got there by putting in lots of practice over many years. For me, that practice never really felt like work as I’ve always loved singing. So, my advice is to pursue the thing that doesn’t feel like work and you never know where it may take you.
